Jared Mellor currently resides in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania and attended the University of South Carolina. The first green roof systems were developed in Germany in the early 1970s and have since advanced in design to provide a range of benefits. Green roofs help to reduce the costs of heating and cooling buildings by helping to insulate them. This insulation also has the effect of soundproofing the building and making its surroundings quieter. Compared to conventional roofs, green roofs also have the advantage of providing a longer waterproofing effect on the top surface of buildings since they protect from mechanical impact and ultraviolet rays.
Green roofs provide several benefits to the environment including improving air quality by reducing CO2 levels and lowering the amount of stormwater runoff from buildings. They also offer habitat for insects, butterflies, and birds, thus helping to compensate for the landscape that is lost due to building construction.
